Flights diverted due to drones near Amritsar airport. Then a revelation

Multiple suspected drones around the operational area of Amritsar International Airport prompted authorities to divert seven flights, including two international ones, to Delhi, an official said on Monday. The incident, which triggered an immediate security response, turned out to be related to a sporting event.

The incident took place at around 10 pm on Sunday (September 6) when a drone-like object's movement was detected near the runway area. Punjab Police and other central security agencies were alerted. Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport Director Anirudh Kumar said multiple suspected drones were seen hovering around the operational area of the airport on Sunday night, prompting authorities to inform police.

He said that activity involving drone-like objects was detected close to the runway area. Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express flights were among those diverted, said the officials. According to the Amritsar police, the drones were flown during a sports tournament in a village near the airport.

Flying drones within an 8 km radius of the airport is prohibited. An investigation by the Raja Sansi police station in Amritsar revealed that the drones seen near the airport were not part of any suspicious activity. A sports tournament was being organised in a village located at a short distance from the airport.

A person had flown a drone to videograph the tournament. Raja Sansi SHO Gurpreet Singh stated that duty officer ASI Niranjan Singh reached the outer area of the airport and investigated the matter. “These drones originated from the video recording of a sports tournament.

Drones were used for this purpose without permission. It is not allowed to fly drones in 8 kilometres radius of the airport. We will take legal action in this matter,” said the SHO.
